A curtain is a thin textile, which can be either used as decoration as well as mounted as a visual shield in front of windows. Here it is distinguished between the half-transparent sheer curtain, also called store, and the not transparent curtain.

Stores hang directly in front of the window. They are usually white or have a very light shade and they are very thinly woven or netlike tied. Therefore, the sheer curtain is translucent, however almost opaque during the day. Furthermore, it protects a bit against draught when the window is opened. These curtains are often decorated with embroidery, because this appears more decorative. Curtains on the other hand hang left and right of the window and are opaque.

 

Besides the decorative aspect they mainly serve for the darkening of the room, in case you pull the curtain in front of the windows or also as a visual shield in the evening hours, when it gets dark outside and the room is lighted.

Nowadays, curtains are mainly manufactured from synthetic fibres – which with regard to fire prevention – are not or only hardly flammable. However, also classical natural fibres like cotton, silk or linen are used for the production of curtains.

The fitting of the curtain normally works with mountings either at a curtain rod or a curtain fillet, which is fixed on the wall over the window or on the ceiling. As mounting for the curtain rings or gliders are used. Some curtains on the other hand have loops sewed from the curtain fabric, which then serve as mounting.

A further kind of curtain is the so called net curtain. It is mounted directly at the window frame with the help of a thin rod and often only covers a part of the window.
